Longtime Syracuse resident and collaborator, Catherine Landis, once shared that as a kid she never understood that streams meandered until she left central New York. So, why are all of the streams in this region straight?
In our lab, we are beginning to explore the historic hydrologic alterations that continue to shape our landscape today. How did channel straightening (and other changes) impact communities, both human and more-than-human? How do these impacts manifest today? In light of this landscape engineering, how do we grapple with new hydrologic development and move forward with restoration?
